Back in 1997, I composed an internationally-recogized set of Good Site Design Practices to help ensure that your website is accessible to as many users as possible. My original document holds the #1 or #2 position in Google for "web site development." Though I eventually sold that website for $3500.00 and released my copyrights to that text, GoodPractices.com still has value today.
With every project, I adhere closely to the following design and management practices:

Write the Web pages for multiple types of Web browsers to provide easy access to the widest possible audience. We test the pages with as many browsers and platforms as possible.

Condense the textual content to fit the time and attention constraints of today's busy Web users.

Use small (byte-wise) graphics so graphics load more quickly in graphics-capable browsers.

When using graphics, provide textual alternatives for image disabled or text-only Web browsers and indexing agents.

Spell check and proofread the documents.

Use advanced features where appropriate.

Ensure that all features degrade gracefully on non-supporting systems.

Establish a routine for locating and fixing broken hypertext links and updating the information.

Include contact information and copyright notices.

Promote your Web site by adding your Web address to search engines directory listings. (To ensure that people can easily find your Web site, it may be necessary to modify your pages slightly to take best advantage of current search technologies.)
